It is estimated that more than one million people in India suffer from moderate to severe pain every year due to advanced cancer. Most patients are simply sent home when curative treatment options—or money to pay for such treatment—are exhausted. Abandoned by the healthcare system at arguably the most vulnerable time of their lives, they face pain, fear, and anguish without professional support, and die in the confines of their homes.

Today, access to pain relief and palliative care is considered as a basic human right. Palliative care, a branch of modern medicine seeks to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-limiting illness. In India, only a small fraction of these people, less than 1%, have access to any palliative care. Morphine, the key medication for treating moderate to severe pain, is inexpensive, highly effective but not available.

Palliative care movement in Andhra Pradesh picked momentum when the Pain & Palliative Care Program started formally in MNJ Institute of Oncology in the year 2006. Today, Hyderabad boasts of a well-developed palliative care program in the community caring for people living with incurable and terminal illnesses like cancer.

The program is supported and run by non-governmental organizations, Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society, Hyderabad ( and Roshni Trust. Some of the services are as listed below:

 – Life At Your Door Step –
“Supporting Patients and Families Where They Want to Be”

Life at Your Doorstep

Life at Your Doorstep, a comprehensive home-based care program supports terminally ill patients and their families in their homes in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Each van has a team of palliative care specialist doctor, a nurse, a social worker and a trained driver. The dedicated home care team not only attends to physical problems such as severe pain, breathlessness, malignant wounds, ascites, but also provides skilled psycho social and spiritual support. Educating and preparing the family for expected changes at the end of life is another key role of the trained team. To date, the program has cared for over 7000 patients since its inception in the year 2008.

Kumudini Devi Hospice and Palliative Care Center

Kumudini Devi Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Kukkatpally is a full-fledged in-patient palliative care facility, which provides a state of the art care for people living with terminal illnesses. The hospice consists of 26 beds, where palliative care is being provided free of cost to adults and children. The facility has round-the-clock in-house services of specialist doctors, nurses, counselors and ayahs. The food is provided free of cost to all the patients and their relatives.

Every patient is ensured a symptom free living and a dignified end-of-life care free from pain and suffering. A mortuary facility is available. A van and a driver is stationed 24- hours to provide hassle free patient transfer and to ensure transfer of dead bodies, in the event of death, to the final place of resting. At a conservative estimate, the institute is providing direct care to 2000 inpatients per year.
We have been able to help a significant number of patients living with the incurable diseases and suffering with pain and other symptoms. Also we have been able to give a suffering free and dignified end to some of these patients. There have been many satisfied and grateful families which we could reach out to and support during and after the end of the life of their loved ones.
